LGBT

LGBT (otherwise known as LGBTQ, LGBTQ+, etc.) stands for people who identify themselves as Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Transgenders (and many more). This idea is not new, but it got widespread in the past decade. In recent years, countries are starting to legalise “gay marriages”, a thing that isn’t even imaginable 30 years ago. Although Singapore has not legalised “gay marriages” yet, there is an increasing number of people here expressing sympathy towards gays, and fighting to legalise “gay marriages” in Singapore.

As Christians, we are called to be sober minded (1 Peter 5:8). We should do things that are pleasing to God, and not do things that are only pleasing to men.

Is being gay wrong?

This question is not easy to answer, for the definition of being gay is not standard. The attraction between 2 man or 2 woman does not necessary mean that it is an abomination in the sight of God – David said that Jonathan’s love for him was more than that for a woman (2 Samuel 1:26)!

The case for David and Jonathan

David in 2 Samuel 1:26 says, “thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women”. This is clearly understood as 2 very good friends having a friendship so good, that it surpasses the type of love relationship towards the other gender. Today, many friends that have the same gender also love each other in this manner! However, due to the world advocating for LGBT, such attractions are always mistaken to be the type of love attraction towards the other gender, and it usually ends up becoming sexual.

It is clear that any sexual relationship outside of marriage is sin. Hence, a gay couple doing sexual acts is no more sinful than a heterosexual unmarried couple doing sexual acts. Let us go deeper and see what is in a marriage.

The legal marriage in God’s sight

In the Bible, it is clear that a marriage has to be between a man and a woman (Matthew 19:4-6) , with both parties not engaged in another marriage (Matthew 19:9). Hence, a male-male or a female-female “marriage” is not what God designed, and hence, invalid. If we were to do the things we like, then why even bother looking at this question?

Hence, we can conclude with ease that any sexual relationship between people with the same gender are an abomination to the Lord.

People who were born gay

We shall not argue whether people can actually be born gay, for the biologists seems to have something to say in this regard, and we are not biologists. Also, this is not the crux of the problem, hence we will not argue about this.

However, regardless of whether the above sentence is true, it is undisputed that we humans do have the tendency to sin – and we usually enjoys them. If we do not enjoy sin, then why do we even sin? For sin is always very enjoyable, to the extent that we will forget about the Lord, and commit the sin willingly. This is our sinful nature, and something we need to pray about daily.

Some people argue that some were born gay, hence being gay is not a choice. Using the same argument, if a man has a very strong sexual lust towards woman, is it lawful for him to rape anyone he sees? We cannot blame him, since he was born like this. If you can see how nonsensical this sounds, then you can see how the previous assertion is just as nonsensical.

People might still argue that 2 gays engaging in sexual acts is not the same as the case where the man rapes the woman, since in one case, both parties are consensual, while in the other, both aren’t. My friend, did you not know that, regardless of whether the action hurts others (or even benefits others), a sin is still a sin?

Conclusion

So, is it wrong to be gay? The answer should be obvious.

What should I do if I lust towards someone with the same gender?

You should do the same thing as you do if you lust towards someone from an opposite gender – pray to God that He will grant you strength to be able to overcome this. God is Faithful, and has promised us that He will not allow us to go through temptations that are too hard for us (1 Corinthians 10:13). Seek Him and you will definitely find the answer.
