One of the most fundamental issues to resolve concerning the ongoing, senseless killing of the unborn is this: where is the prophetic voice of the church that is supposedly given the responsibility to speak to the public square – which includes the State and the government? What are we doing as the conscience of society in this problem of abortion?
Herein lies what Leo called the “political gap.” It is a gap that shouldn’t be there if the Church at large had been witnessing the truths of God concerning the sanctity of human life to our countrymen. Sadly, the Church has remained silent on this issue.
The Church has remained toothless, emaciated, and weak in her testimony to the world concerning the killing of the unborn in their mothers’ wombs, and it is tempting to infer that perhaps the reason is this: She has chosen to remain silent, and has done so deliberately, not so much out of ignorance but out of a cold heart. This apathy is diagnostic of a heart condition – that of lukewarmness, lovelessness, and even spiritual backsliding and regression.
Is this too harsh an indictment for the Church? May we be found guiltless when He returns to judge the living and the dead.
